Dol Purnima – The Sacred Festival of Colors and Devotion Every spring in India, the air comes alive with colors, music, and joy. While the festival of Holi has gained international fame as the “festival of colors,” in Bengal and parts of eastern India, it is celebrated with a deeply devotional spirit as Dol Purnima. Rooted in the eternal love of Radha and Krishna, Dol Purnima beautifully blends spirituality, tradition, and festivity. Origin of the Festival The word “Dol” means “swing.” According to tradition, Dol Purnima recalls the time when Lord Krishna joyfully played on a swing with Radha in the blooming groves of Vrindavan during the full moon of Phalguna. Along with the gopis, they celebrated by playfully throwing flower pollen (pushpa-renu). Over time, this evolved into the sprinkling of abir or colored powder, a custom still observed today.
